At MC Piano Tuition, I believe the best musicians aren't simply taught what to play—they learn how to think, create and express themselves through music.

Everything I teach is built around one key principle: intrinsic motivation.

Rather than relying on external rewards or simply telling students what to practise, my curriculum is designed to help students develop a genuine desire to play. When students enjoy learning and feel ownership over their musical journey, progress becomes faster, more meaningful and longer lasting.

This is why my lessons are centred around creativity, curiosity and discovery. Students don't just learn the piano—they become musicians.

My Teaching Philosophy

Traditional piano lessons often focus on working through method books, copying what is on the page and preparing for the next exam.

I take a different approach.

​

From their very first lesson, students are encouraged to create music as well as perform it. They compose, improvise, experiment and solve musical problems, developing a deep understanding of how music works instead of simply memorising notes.

​

Every student creates their own personalised method book, filled with their compositions, discoveries and achievements. This gives them ownership of their learning and transforms lessons from something they have to do into something they genuinely want to do.

​

As students grow, they are gradually given more independence, helping them become confident, self-motivated musicians who enjoy exploring music for themselves.

​

A Curriculum That Grows With You

My curriculum develops alongside each student, from their very first lesson through to advanced performance and diploma level.

Every stage is designed to build technical ability, musical understanding and intrinsic motivation.

Stage 1 – Discovering Music​

​

Students begin making music immediately.

Through composition, improvisation, rhythm games, listening activities and creative exploration, they develop coordination, musical awareness and early reading skills in a way that feels natural and enjoyable.

Because students are creating their own music from the beginning, they quickly develop confidence and a genuine excitement about learning.

Stage 2 – Building Strong Foundations

Once the basics are established, students begin learning a wider range of repertoire while continuing to compose and improvise.

They develop:

• Secure piano technique

• Fluent music reading

• Strong rhythmic understanding

• Musical expression

• Listening skills

Music theory through practical application

Rather than simply following instructions, students begin making their own musical decisions, strengthening both their understanding and their motivation.

Stage 3 – Becoming an Independent Musician

​

As students become more experienced, lessons shift from teacher-led instruction towards independent musicianship.

Students learn to:

• Analyse music independently

• Learn pieces efficiently

• Play by ear

• Harmonise melodies

• Improvise confidently

• Arrange music

• Perform with confidence

• Develop effective practice strategies

By this stage, students no longer rely on constant guidance. They have the confidence and curiosity to explore music independently because they understand how it works.

Stage 4 – Advanced Musicianship

​

Advanced students refine the skills expected of professional musicians.

Lessons may include:

• Advanced technical development

• Stylistic interpretation

• Diploma and audition preparation

• Advanced harmony and analysis

• Jazz improvisation

• Composition and arranging

• Recording and music production

• Performance psychology

• Accompaniment and ensemble playing

Lessons become increasingly personalised, allowing students to pursue their own artistic interests while continuing to develop as creative, independent musicians.

No two students learn in exactly the same way.

Some students aspire to perform Beethoven, while others dream of playing jazz, film music, video game soundtracks or their favourite pop songs.

Every lesson is individually planned around each student's interests, personality and goals. By connecting learning to music that students genuinely care about, motivation comes naturally and progress becomes both enjoyable and sustainable.

Exams Are Optional

Exams can provide valuable milestones, but they are never the sole purpose of learning music.
